When a project needs serious absorption on walls, two product families usually make the shortlist: fabric-wrapped panels (glass fiber or mineral wool core with an acoustic textile face) and PET acoustic panels (recycled polyester felt, solid through the body). Both absorb well. They differ in nearly everything else — and the right choice depends on the room, the budget and the buyer’s business model.
Absorption and depth
Fabric-wrapped panels have a long track record in studios, cinemas and auditoriums. Their dense mineral or glass-fiber cores deliver excellent broadband absorption, especially in thicker builds (50mm and beyond), and they pair well with air cavities for low-frequency control. PET panels perform best in the speech band (500–4000 Hz); in 12–24mm thicknesses they cover the majority of commercial room needs, and 24mm panels or cavities extend them downward.
Practical read: for engineering-critical spaces (studios, screening rooms, auditoria), fabric-wrapped systems with consultant-designed cavities still lead. For offices, schools, restaurants and general commercial interiors, PET panels deliver the required performance with less complexity.
Durability and handling
- PET panels are impact-tolerant, edge-colorfast and CNC-machinable on site; they do not dent, fray or delaminate in normal service.
- Fabric-wrapped panels are more vulnerable: the textile face can snag, stain and sag, corners crush in transit, and damaged fabric usually means re-wrapping in a workshop.
For schools, public corridors and anywhere hands meet walls, PET felt’s toughness is a decisive advantage.
Customization and logistics
PET felt ships as finished panel stock in dozens of colors — cut, printed and shaped with standard tools, restockable from inventory. Fabric-wrapped panels are typically made to order: core, fabric choice and edge profile create thousands of variants, longer lead times, and freight that must protect finished corners. Distributors often carry PET as stock product and import fabric-wrapped panels per project.
Sustainability and indoor air
PET felt is recycled-content, formaldehyde-free and re-recyclable — an easy story in certification projects. Fabric-wrapped products vary by core; glass fiber cores need careful edge sealing, and fabric sourcing transparency varies widely between suppliers.
How MST Acoustics sees the market
We manufacture PET-based wall panels, baffles and wood slat systems for exactly the segment where felt wins: demanding commercial interiors that need documented absorption, tough surfaces and reliable supply. For clients with specialist studio requirements, our 24mm panels and slat-panel systems cover most applications — and we are always straightforward about where a consultant-designed fabric system remains the better tool. Choose by room, not by fashion; the acoustic data will make the decision for you.
