Sustainability has moved from marketing language to procurement checklists. For acoustic products that use wood — slat panels, perforated panels, grooved panels — the question every serious buyer now asks is simple: where does the wood come from? The answer that satisfies most tenders, retail standards and green building schemes is FSC certification.
What FSC actually certifies
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) runs two complementary systems. Forest Management certification applies to the forests themselves. Chain of Custody (CoC) certification applies to every company that handles the material afterwards — sawmills, panel factories, distributors. Only with an unbroken chain of custody can a finished wood slat panel carry an FSC claim such as “FSC Mix” or “FSC 100%”.
For a buyer, the practical implication is this: your supplier’s FSC certificate is what lets you sell the product as FSC-certified. Without CoC somewhere in the chain, the claim collapses.
Who is asking for it
- Public tenders. Governments in the EU, UK and North America increasingly require certified timber products in construction contracts.
- Green building ratings. LEED, BREEAM and WELL award credits for responsibly sourced materials — documentation from your supplier converts directly into project points.
- Retail and hospitality brands. International chains apply their own timber sourcing policies to every fit-out, in every country.
- End consumers. “FSC-certified wood” is one of the few sustainability labels shoppers actually recognize on sight.
How to verify a supplier’s certificate
- Ask for the FSC CoC certificate number and the name of the certification body.
- Check the scope — the certificate must cover the products you are buying, at the production site that will manufacture your order.
- Verify validity and status through the public FSC database or the certification body’s website.
- Request that FSC claims appear on invoices and shipping documents — that is what preserves the chain of custody on your side.
MST Acoustics and responsible wood sourcing
MST Acoustics holds FSC Chain of Custody certification for our wood slat acoustic panel production. Our slat panels combine FSC-certified MDF and real wood veneer with a recycled PET acoustic felt backing — so the panel scores on both material fronts: responsible wood and recycled fiber. For projects that demand documented sourcing, we supply the certificate copy, FSC-claimed documentation and matching test reports (EN 13501-1 B-s1,d0) as part of the standard document package.
When you compare suppliers, treat the FSC certificate the same way you treat a fire report: verify it, scope it, and keep it in your project file. It protects your brand as much as the forest.
